Speaking after the publication of the Analysis in to the Recent Trends in the Irish Residential Sales Market in 2016 by Daft.ie, the Galway West - South Mayo Senator says:
‘The rise of house prices in 2016 by 14% in Mayo, 13% in Galway city, 15.9% in Roscommon & 10.6% in Co. Galway indicate that the cost of buying a house is increasing far more quickly than people’s ability to purchase them.
‘It shows that there simply aren’t enough houses available and that where there are that purchasers at the top end of the market are forcing prices up. Many of these are investment companies buying houses to rent out at exorbitant rates to fleece young families desperately trying to get on the housing ladder themselves.
‘The level of the increases show that government policies are actually accelerating house price increases dramatically, rather than slowing them down. This indicates to me that this is the intention of the government rather than it being just a symptom of a dysfunctional market.
‘This, on top of a chronic lack of social housing, inaction on dealing with the mortgage distress crisis, lack of action on new builds and the blocking by Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil of Rent Certainty measures proposed by Sinn Féin four times in recent months, show that the FF/FG coalition is an integral part of the problem, rather than the solution and as such their TD’s are failing people across the country caught up in the housing crisis – nowhere more clearly than in the West.
‘Sinn Féin’s ‘Better for Housing’ policy document outlines the many progressive steps that could and should be taken to stand up for ordinary families and people in Ireland without suitable housing, which if they had been implemented in the last year would have made a significant difference rather than deepening the crisis’.
