Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has called on the Government to put the necessary resources in place for Galway County Council to provide a Fire Station in South Connemara. ‘It is blatantly obvious that the present service cannot react quickly enough to emergencies in the area at present’,according to the Sinn Féin Senator. ‘The Council has an obligation under the Fire Services Act 1981 to provide ‘a fast and efficient service’ and I am imploring the Minister for the Environment to provide the necessary funding to give the people of Connemara the service they are entitled to’, he says.
The Senator was speaking on an Adjournment Debate in the Seanad on Tuesday evening on a question that he had put to Minister Phil Hogan. In a reply delivered by Minister of State Róisín Shortall she praised the emergency services and explained that there is a national review of fire services being undertaken and that fire services for Connemara will be provided for with regard to the findings in the review and in the context of resources available.
The Galway West Senator said he hopes that this is not a long fingering exercise by the Government – it is clear, he maintains, from the statistics relating to call out times and from the distance other stations are from Connemara that there is a need for a service and an extra station in South Connemara and he asked the Minister of State to confirm that the necessary resources would be made available for such a service if the review indicates that is appropriate’.
‘I am supporting the campaign of Coiste Cearta Chonamara, who have evidence that it has taken up to an hour and three quarters in some cases for the fire services to get to emergencies in rural parts of Connemara after a 999 call. That is not a satisfactory service. No one wants a tragedy to happen for the State to take heed of the calls which have been made by campaigners for many years. Economic excuses should not be used to deny a community of a fundamental service such as this and we will continue our campaigning until we get a fire service for the people of Connemara to which they are entitled’, says Ó Clochartaigh.
Briogáid Dóiteáin do Chonamara pléite sa Seanad
Tá sé ráite ag an Seanadóir Trevor Ó Clochartaigh gur gá don Rialtas acmhainní a chuir ar fáil do Chomhairle Chontae na Gaillimhe le gur féidir leo ionad Briogáid Dóiteáin a lonnú i gConamara Theas. ‘Tá sé ríshoiléir nach féidir leis an seirbhís atá ann faoi láthair freastal ar cheantair i gConamara sách sciopaí’, dar leis an Seanadóir as Sinn Féin. ‘Tá dualgas ar an gComhairle faoin Acht Seirbhísí Dóiteáin 1981 ‘seirbhís tapaidh agus éifeachtach’ a chuir ar fáil agus tá mé ag impí ar an Aire Comhshaol dothain maoiniú a chuir ar fáil le cothrom na féinne a thabhairt do mhuintir Chonamara’, deir sé.
Bhí an Seanadóir ag labhairt le linn dísopóireacht ar an athló sa Seanad tráthnóna Dé Máirt ar cheist a chuir sé ar an Aire Comhshaol, Phil Hogan. I bhfreagra ar son an Aire a thug an tAire Stáit Róisin Shortall, thug sí ardmholadh do na seirbhísí dóiteáin agus léirigh go bhfuil athbhreithniú náisiúnta ar sheirbhísí dóiteáin ar bun agus go ndéanfar soláthar seirbhísí i gConamara a mheas faoi scáth an athbhreithnithe sin agus i gcomthéacs na hacmhainní atá ar fáil.
Dúirt an Seanadóir as Gaillimh Thiar i bhfreagra di go bhfuil
súil aige nach ag cur caora thar abhainn atá an Rialtas – go bhfuil sé soiléir ó na fíricí maidir leis na glaonna amach, agus an fhad atá na h-ionaid eile ó Chonamara, go bhfuil gá le ionad breise i gConamara Theas agus d’iarr sé ar an Aire Stáit deimhniú go gcuirfí acmhainní ar fáil don tseirbhís má léiríonn an athbhreithniú gur chóir sin a dhéanamh.
‘Tá mé ag tacú leis an bhfeachtas atá ar siúl ag Coiste Cearta Chonamara, a bhfuil fianaise acu go dtógann sé uair agus trí ceathrú in amanna ar an seirbhís teacht chuig ceantair iargúlta i gConamara tar éis glaoch éigeandála a bheith déanta. Níl sé sin maith go leor mar sheirbhís. Níl aon
duine ag iarraidh go dtarlódh tragóid éigin le go dtabharfaidh an Stát aird ar an éileamh seo atá ann le blianta fada. Ní chóir leithscéalta eacnamaíocha a úsáid gan bunseirbhís riachtanach a chuir ar fáil agus leanfaidh muid don fheachtasaíocht go dtí go bhfaighfidh muid an seirbhís dóiteáin atá dlite do phobal Chonamara’, a deir Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.
