‘The 2013 Budget cutbacks will have a huge impact on Gaeltacht and Irish language activities and Minister of State McGinley must outline where the axe will fall’, according to Sinn Féin’s Gaeltacht spokesperson. ‘One of the most pressing questions is whether his department will continue to support the air service to the Aran Islands in 2013?’.
‘There has been nearly sixteen million euro cut from the Gaeltacht and Irish language budgets by the Minister of State since he came into office two years ago’, says Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh. ‘That equates to 16% of the overall budget and jobs will be lost as a result’.
‘It is quite clear that this Government is not serious about job creation in the Gaeltacht. There is a practical decrease in
the capital budget of Údarás na Gaeltachta of €3m, while at the same time increases have been given to Enterprise Ireland of €30m, IDA €12m and SFADCO €1.5m. It is clear to me from these figures that the Gaeltacht areas are not getting parity of treatment in these matters. This will be compounded by the more general economic issues such as people having less disposable income, increased fuel and electricity costs as a result of extra carbon taxes, higher rates and not tackling upwardly only rates as a budgetary measure which will undoubtedly have a detrimental effect on business activity in the Gaeltacht and outside of it’, says Ó Clochartaigh.
‘This budget is inequitable for families, students, people on middle and lower incomes, social welfare payments, older people, carers and many more. This Government has not seized the opportunity to go after the wealthy in this State and they focussed their cuts once more on those people who cannot afford to carry more of the burden’.
‘This budget is regressive for rural communities also due to increases in car tax, more expensive fuel costs, cuts to small farmers, the closure of Garda stations, education cuts and more’, according to the Sinn Féin Senator.
‘It is blatantly obvious that Fine Gael are wearing the trousers in this Coalition, that the Labour party has reneged on its basic principles and that both parties are following the flawed, disastrous economic model which Fianna Fáíl while bringing the economy to its knees’, says Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.

Níor ghlac an Rialtas seo an deis chun dul i ndiaidh lucht an rachmais agus dhírigh siad arís eile ar an dream nach bhfuil in acmhainn an ualach breise seo a iompar’.
